The HKSA Research Methodology Workshop titled Social Research in the Age of AI was successfully held on 16 May 2026 at Hong Kong Baptist University. The two-hour event attracted over 50 participants, including a significant proportion of postgraduate students, demonstrating strong interest in emerging research methodologies.

The workshop featured four engaging presentations by distinguished scholars: Prof. Lai Wei from The University of Hong Kong, Prof. Francisco Olivos from Lingnan University, Prof. Simon Fung from City University of Hong Kong, and Prof. Holy Shum from Hong Kong Shue Yan University. Their talks covered a diverse range of topics, including the integration of AI with traditional survey methods, practical challenges and lessons in applying AI to social research, the bridging of traditional inquiry approaches with digital sociology, and the exploration of AI-related research areas such as creative industries.

The speakers effectively demonstrated how AI can complement established research practices, while also introducing new methodological possibilities. Interactive discussions further enriched participants’ understanding of both the opportunities and limitations of AI in social research. Participants responded very positively to the programme, with all four presentations regarded as highly useful, thought-provoking, and inspiring.

Overall, the workshop provided a valuable platform for academic exchange and capacity building, particularly for postgraduate students seeking to incorporate AI into their research. It highlighted the growing importance of interdisciplinary approaches and offered fresh perspectives for navigating the evolving research landscape.
