The 2025 Hong Kong Sociological Association (HKSA) Annual Conference was successfully held on December 6, 2025, under the theme “Navigating a Changing World: ComparativePerspectives on Social Structures and Inequalities.” Hosted by Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU), the event brought together more than 180 participants from 36 institutions across Asia, Europe, and North America. The program featured a rich program of 103 panel and oral presentations and 16 poster sessions, showcasing cutting‑edge sociological research.
The keynote lecture by Prof. Man‑Yee Kan (University of Oxford) examined how time use—particularly leisure time—reflects social inequalities. Drawing on comparative data from East Asian and Western societies, she highlighted how cultural norms and institutional contexts shape gender differences in leisure, with implications for health, well‑being, and broader gender roles. In the afternoon, the plenary roundtable “East AsianFamilies in Comparative Perspective” brought together James Raymo (Princeton University), Chang Hwan Kim (University of Kansas), and Yuying Tong (The Chinese University of Hong Kong). The discussion focused on demographic shifts such as declining fertility, delayed marriage, and aging populations in East Asia. Panelists compared policy responses across countries, debating the effectiveness of family support measures and highlighting challenges in balancing work, caregiving, and social expectations.
The success of thisyear’s conference reflects HKSA’s ongoing commitment to fostering collaboration and advancing sociological dialogue. Looking ahead, HKSA will continue to strengthen its role as a hub for scholarly exchange while contributing sociological perspectives to the wider community.
