• 2025 HKSA Public Lecture

The 2025 Hong Kong Sociological Association (HKSA) Public Lecture, titled “What is Commoning? Community Creation and Shared Spaces (何謂Commoning? 社群共造與共享空間),” was successfully held on 23 August 2025.

This event was organized by HKSA in collaboration with theDepartment of Sociology and Social Policy at Lingnan University. Our distinguished speaker was Professor PUN Ngai, Chair Professor of the Department of Cultural Studies at Lingnan University and Honorary Professor in the Department of Sociology at The University of Hong Kong. The session was moderated by Professor Kaxton SIU Yu-kwan, Associate Professor from the Department of Sociology at Hong Kong Baptist University.

Professor Pun shared her valuable insights onthe concept of “communing” from theoretical perspectives. She also introduced the practical work of “i-COMMONHK,” a platform that promotesand implements alternative economic models such as fair trade and cooperative economy through organising international and Hong Kong cultural exchange tours, fair trade, online shop, social media, and community activities. These efforts aim to promote community economy and mutual support, and to advocate for building an equal and inclusive community.

During the Q&A session chaired by Professor Siu, Professor Pun engaged in a dialogue with the moderator and audience, addressing participants’ questions about the challenges and opportunities of developing “communing” both in Hong Kong and overseas. She encouraged attendees to take part in experiential learning and cultural exchange activities to deepen their understanding of community building.

The publiclecture attracted an audience of approximately 50 attendees, including scholars, researchers, postgraduate and undergraduate students, and practitioners from various fields.

The lecture successfully bridged academic theory with real-world application, providing a stimulating forum to discuss alternative, community-driven models for urban development. The HKSA extends its sincere gratitude to Professor Pun, Professor Siu, Lingnan University, and all participants for contributing to a meaningful and insightful exchange on building more collaborative and inclusive futures for Hong Kong.
