    The Hong Kong Sociological Association (HKSA) proudly hosted its second 2024 HKSA Publication Seminar, titled "Dialogue with Professor Yang Cao, Editor-in-Chief of Social Science Research," on December 16, 2024. The seminar featured Professor Yang Cao, an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and the Editor-in-Chief of Social Science Research (SSR).

     

    In his comprehensive presentation, Professor Cao began by detailing the publication and review process at SSR. He emphasized the importance of originality, the robustness of quantitative methods, and the relevance of the research questions addressed in submitted manuscripts. Professor Cao provided an insider's perspective on what the editorial team looks for in high-quality submissions, stressing that clarity in research design and the significance of findings are crucial.

    He explained the considerations editors have when evaluating papers, including the coherence of the argument, the quality of data analysis, and the contribution to existing literature. He highlighted common pitfalls that lead to rejection and advised participants on how to avoid them. Professor Cao also discussed the peer review process, offering tips on how to respond to reviewers' comments constructively.

     

    One of the key segments of the seminar focused on strategies to enhance the possibility of successful publication. Professor Cao advised attendees to thoroughly understand the scope and aims of SSR, to ensure their work aligns with the journal's focus. He covered essential aspects such as structuring the paper, presenting data effectively, and the importance of a compelling abstract and introduction. Furthermore, he also provided practical advice on manuscript preparation.

    The session attracted over 60 participants, many raised insightful questions, leading to a lively discussion that enriched the learning experience. Professor Cao's generous sharing of his expertise was greatly appreciated, offering valuable guidance for both novice and experienced researchers.
